A site for horse people to make friends

I've had the privledge of "getting to know" quite a few horses over the years, each teaching me something new. But nothing will ever replace the experience of getting my first horse.

I was 13 and had spent the last year living for my weekly half-hour riding lesson when my parents decided I wasn't growing out of my horse-crazy faze any time soon and they decided to get my sister and I a horse!

Looking back, I very much doubt the wisdom of the advice we got. "Buy a young horse so you don't inherit someone else's mistakes." But, whether smart or not, it worked out for us.

We were soon the proud owners of a 15 month old black quarter horse filly named "Maggie." For the next 6 months, my sister and I took turns not only brushing her for hours and braiding her mane and tail, but learning how to lunge, ground drive, put the saddle on for the first time, and eventually start putting weight on her back.

Sharing a horse was particularly interesting when we started trail riding. One of us would ride while the other walked and we'd trade occassionally. I'm sure Maggie got tired of the constant climbing on and off her back, but she didn't complain much.

We hadn't had Maggie for any more than a year before wanting to move on to start showing in local shows. So we sold Maggie to get a horse more fit for the show ring. But that little black horse will always hold a special place in my memories.

Please feel free to share your stories about your first equine! :) I'd love to hear them.
